Zero-Energy Independent Residential PV + Seasonal Storage Project in Thuringia, Germany
This single-story modern detached house in the Thuringian countryside is a benchmark example in Europe for achieving zero-energy heating with the 'PV + seasonal heat storage' system. The exterior walls are made with 42.5 cm thick insulated blocks, with a U-value as low as 0.18 W/m²K, giving it excellent thermal insulation on its own. To achieve full energy independence, the owners installed 33 square meters of photovoltaic panels on the south-facing roof, paired with 88 square meters of flat-plate solar collectors, and placed a huge seasonal hot water storage tank of nearly 40 cubic meters in the core area of the house (stairwell/basement).

During the summer, when sunlight is abundant, the photovoltaic panels meet the household's daily electricity needs, and the excess heat collected by the solar collectors is stored in a large thermal storage tank. In the long and cold heating season of winter in Thuringia, the solar heat stored during summer is released from the storage tank, fully covering the entire home's heating and domestic hot water needs, truly achieving the goal of "saving summer sunlight for winter use." This system enables the residence to achieve 100% renewable energy self-sufficiency, reducing annual carbon dioxide emissions by more than 3 tons, and has become a classic example of a zero-energy rural home in Thuringia, Germany.

In a detached house on the outskirts of Jena, Thuringia, the owner installed a 12 kWp solar PV system with a 10 kWh home battery in early 2026 to deal with Germany's latest residential solar policy (from 2027, fixed feed-in tariffs for systems under 25 kW will be abolished, and the grid connection peak will be limited to 50% of installed capacity).
